We can buy wood stains at the do-it-yourself store, but they are based on chemical dyes. There are many natural wood dyes that you can make at home. Some dyes are better than others
I have been experimenting with a lot of DIY wood dye recipes. I found a few that work very efficiently.
Why would you choose a natural dye?
If you are a fan of permaculture or want to reduce the number of alternative wood shades, this might be better. he does not always have an ethical choice but also a financial economy. Many of the alternatives I already had.
Rust wood stain?
the suspension of rust in a fluid is a good dye. technically, it’s not a good reaction. The effect is brown but it depends on the stained wood and the concentration of the suspension.
How to make wood stain rust?
An easy way to make this rust slurry is to mix two basic ingredients with a little time. Making your own rusty wood stain is not necessarily a scientific experiment, but a bit of bad luck. More an art form than an experience mixed with a little trial and error.
Ingredients for wood stain rust?
Vinegar
Steel wool, not the type with soap
A glass jar with a plastic lid, do not use metal like
And a little time
Why does it work as an effective wood stain?
The science behind this is based on the natural component of wood, Tanin !. Tannin is abundant in oaks and chestnuts and other hardwoods. The strongly alkaline PH reacts with the tannins and creates a reddish-brown colour. The random behaviour of the unregulated PH is why you should test the rusty DIY steel wool wood dye.
The wood tincture, so “Take this kettle!”
Yes, it will boil the boiler and add tea and a natural stain. Yes, it’s a bit trial and error like a lot of natural dye recipes but it’s an effective dye.
Wooden coffee stain
Other household ingredients may have an effective wood stain. It works the same way as tea dye, but instead of making tea, but simply saturating the coffee beans in hot water.
Wood stain is not the most powerful wood stain you can make, but it produces pleasant results. I did not find that coffee tincture required several applications before a real perceptible colour effect was apparent.
Be aware that parents staining when wet is much darker than when they are dry. wood stain and tea, wood stain is simply staining wood colour.
Wooden Wine Stains
I do not know where the author of a wood stain. Personally, I am not too comfortable with this technique because it contains sugar and sugars as a source of food for the bacteria.
After experimenting with a wood stain, you must admit several applications.
The wine made by the wood stain is dry to a warm, almost reddish colour but I guess that is to be expected.
Beet wood tincture
Well, I like a little beetroot in vinegar straight out of the jar! Beet dye or beet wood is by nature a very red dye. Beet, like wine, also has high sugar content.
To make beet wood, you will have to harvest your beet from the garden. At this point, the beet should be very soft and the skins will not be able to liquidate it. Using a sieve or some sort of fine sieve of the liquid of the beet puree. You can use old nylon stockings for this job if you wish.
Alternatively, you can use the red beet paste or mash and apply it to your wood. I like to leave it for a moment and then wipe it off later. This method gives a beautiful red colour.
Turmeric
Well, we have a good curry! Turmeric really targets his for multiple purposes. Turmeric is not only a culinary spice but also has important health benefits.
But I move away from the subject and we are talking about wood stains. We do not always want to darken our tree. but sometimes, it can be interesting to add a little colour and this is certainly not the case.
The turmeric spice has a yellow ocher colour provides a beautiful yellow stain to the wood. Remember that natural wood stains behave differently depending on the wood. Softwoods absorb more stains on hardwoods, so you can expect the colour to be much deeper.
Turmeric tincture is very handy if you like the dark yellow colour and keep it dry. Turmeric-based wood stain preparation is simple, just add a little water to a specific amount of turmeric powder to get a paste. Apply the paste then wipe.
An alkaline solution of lime
Lime powder mixed with water is another way to create an ageing effect. Technically, it is not a stain but a way to create a chemical reaction with tannin in the wood, it works extremely well with oak and especially chestnut.
The immediate effect may seem a bit red at first, but it turns brown after a few minutes.
If the effect is a little dark, you can soften the shade by applying a little white vinegar. The low pH acid in white vinegar neutralizes the high pH of the lime mix.
I used this method regularly and it is very effective for ageing wood.
Why not make your own concoction?
You can use any of these elements and add other ingredients to enhance your wood stain. For example, you can use your mix of steel wool and vinegar and add tea or coffee. I found this very effective and improves the end result.
Test your homemade stains.
Because homemade natural wood stains are made under uncontrolled conditions, they are unreliable. Therefore, when using natural wood stains, first test a small area or use a fall from the same wood. I have made many mixtures and there are not two of them.
Natural wood powder.
When you have made a satisfactory wood stain that satisfies you, you can dry it and then reduce it to powder.
It works well for organic wood stains, for example, tea or coffee.
The reason we dry and grind natural wood stains is that it is possible to produce larger quantities that will not go away. This is the water of natural dyes that tend to turn green and organic substances contribute to the deterioration of the dye.
The drawing process preserves the wood stain. Just use wood stain
add it to the water.
To dry your natural wood stain powder, you will need a method of drying the wet solution. Pasta such as beetroot dye is easier to dry because it contains more solids and contains less water. When I dry my dye before turning it into powder, I use a food dryer.
I spread the dough on a Teflon baking sheet and place it in the drier until the dough becomes brittle. I would then grind the dried pasta between two flat stones in fine powder.
Keep the powder in a sealed jar with two bags of silica gel.
My conclusion about natural wood stains
Natural wood stain is a great way to experiment with different shades and colours. Using natural stains that come from our environment or can be found in the kitchen closet!
Although natural wood dyes or dyes can work perfectly for you, they are not foolproof.
The problem with alternative wood stains is that they have very little control over the final effect. It is therefore very difficult to reproduce the result of one piece of furniture on another.
What I think is important is that for every project you have to produce enough dye to carry it out. To reproduce natural dyes so that they can have any continuity is not easy, if not impossible.
Commercial dyes available at DIY stores are reliable, but natural dyes are very dependent on the application method and the variety of the wood. Different woods have different pH levels and tannins, which can affect the final result.
Natural dyes are excellent but expect to experiment until you get the desired effect, otherwise buy a tin on the shelf.
